1984 presented the third Leominster Festival following the very successful years of 1980 and 1982.

Programme Introduction

Leominster is an ancient market town set in the rich, red earth of the Herefordshire countryside. Famous in the Middle Ages for its fine quality wool, “Lemster Ore”, it retains today many mediaeval “black and white” buildings, such as those in Draper’s Lane and Corn Square, and of a later date the magnificent Grange Court (formerly the Market Hall) built by John Abel, the King’s carpenter, in 1633. In contrast, Etnam Street and Church Street are almost completely Georgian.

Church Street also contains the Forbury chapel (now a Dancing School) built 700 years ago in 1284. Though outwardly a simple structure, it has a handsome hammerbeam roof with carved heads. The priory Church itself, in which many of the concerts will take place, is a beautiful building with Norman pillars, 12th century carving and exquisite ballflower decoration, reminding us that the town originally grew up around the Anglo-Saxon minster.

The third Leominster Festival again offers a wide variety of events and artists of national and international renown. The area is also fortunate to be the home of many creative artists, some of whose work will be seen and heard in the Art Exhibition, the Craft Fair, plays and concerts during the next fortnight. We hope there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

There is free car parking in all areas and most of the events will be within easy walking distance of the town centre.

The design on the cover is the Leominster Knot, a unique and ancient symbol of the Town’s Trade Guilds signifying their independence and fellowship.

Monday 18th June 1984	Local Amateur Talent Competition For adults and children
Tuesday 19th June 1984	The Leominster Arts Club Drama Group presents Open All Night An original play by Coral Earnshaw
Wednesday 20th June 1984	Leominster History Tour Conducted by Mr J W Tonkin BA FSA
Thursday 21st June 1984	Golden Age of English Music and Dance Choral and instrumental music with dances
Friday 22nd June 1984	Lunch Time Organ Recital Concert by The Medici String Quartet Music by Haydn, Dvorak and Ravel
Saturday 23rd June 1984	Festival Cricket Match At The Grange Jazz Master Class Jazz instrumentalists are invited to take part All Star Jazz Concert Featuring Roy Williams, Digby Fairweather, John Barnes and Stan Barker
Sunday 24th June 1984	Entertainment with Words and Music Devised by Anthony and Juliana Hughes
