Michala Petri
Festivals 1988

Programme Biography

When Miss Petri made her debut in Australia this year, “The Australian” said of her, “Michala Petri, brought to her playing the technical command and musical insight of an assured and mature exponent. Her command of the instrument, or more accurately, instruments (because recorders come in many sizes and timbres) is phenomenal. Her playing raises to celestial heights an instrument which all too often is looked down upon as little more than a medium for mass education of primary school children or for earnest amateur ensembles.”

Born in Copenhagen, Miss Petri began playing the recorder at the age of three and was first heard on Danish Radio when she was five. Her debut as concerto soloist took place at the Tivoli in 1969, the year in which she began her studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Hanover.

Since then she has given hundreds of concerts in Scandinavia, East and West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Australia, the United States of America and Great Britain. Everywhere she has received the highest praise for her astonishing virtuosity in a repertoire ranging from the early baroque to avante garde works.
