Programme Biography

From the Programme in 1980:

ROY WILLIAMS and DIGBY FAIRWEATHER are two of our foremost Jazz musicians. Roy Williams, considered by some critics to be the best jazz trombonist in Europe, currently plays with the Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Digby Fairweather, leading jazz trumpet player, joins Roy as front line to the New Delta Jazz Band.

From the Programme in 1982 and 1984:

JOHN BARNES and STAN BARKER join ROY WILLIAMS and DIGBY FAIRWEATHER, returning by popular demand, to give an all-star front line. John Barnes plays baritone, tenor and alto saxophone, clarinet and flute with equal conviction. Playing for many years with Alex Welch, in recent times he has toured many parts of the world as a soloist as well as a member of the Midnite Follies Orchestra and the Humphrey Lyttelton Band. Stan Barker is a Musical Director of Jazz College which helps to ensure the continuing future of classic jazz traditions. He is one of Britain’s best-known jazz pianists. Roy Williams, well-known as an international soloist, played for many years with the Alex Welch Band before joining Humphrey Lyttelton. Considered to be one of the finest jazz trombonists in the world, he was voted trombone player of the year 1980-81 in International Jazz Journal. Digby Fairweather, currently working with Jazz College, ‘Velvet’, the ‘Pizza Allstars’, and as a solo performer, won the BBC Jazz Musician of the Year Award 1979/80 and the Jazz Journal International Readers Poll 1980, as the most highly rated British musician.
