Programme Biography
The Surplus Cassocks was formed in Solihull in 1976 with the intention of providing close harmony entertainment for charity. The group, which has sung widely throughout Birmingham and the surrounding area, boasts two King’s Choral Scholars and a professional counter tenor among former members. All six of the current group also sing in St. Alphege Choir and in their spare time are further occupied with bits and bytes, briefs, buzz boxes, boilers, braces and births.
Their musical repertoire is wide—ranging from traditional English folk music to American Barbershop, Negro Spirituals and modern pop song arrangements. The group recently commissioned a work from John Joubert, with a first performance in Birmingham Cathedral in September 1987.
The group has supported many Birmingham and national charities, most recently the Samaritans, St. Christopher’s House, Olton (C. of E.), Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Warren Pearl Nursing House, Solihull.
