Dharambir Singh is a sitar player of the Vilayat Khan style which is nowadays one of the most popular in India, both with listeners and performers. His training in sitar started when he was 12. His dedication to hard practice and respect for his guru, Ustad Vilayat Khan, bore fruit and today Dharambir, still in his early twenties, is considered one of his foremost disciples and one of the foremost young sitarists of India.
Dharambir’s first public performance was at the Shankar Hall in Delhi when he was 15 years old. Since then he has given many concerts throughout the various states in India. He came to England in 1979 and has been working hard to propagate Indian Classical music in this country.
He appeared at the Purcell Room for the first time in 1980 and since then has been at the South Bank Halls three times. He has given recitals in some of the major musical festivals such as Nottingham, Portsmouth and Concord.
He has appeared on television many times and Channel 4 has just completed a fulllength documentary on his work and music.
Dharambir is accompanied by his wife, Gunwant Kaur on tanpura in the Ragas for sitar, tabla and tanpura.
